WELCOME

Dr Emma Kavanagh is a musicologist and cultural historian, currently based in the PRISM and TELEMMe research groups at Aix-Marseille Université. Her research focuses on opera in France between the Revolution and the First World War, with a particular emphasis on representation, staging and stagecraft, and music and the press. Emma's work is published or forthcoming in journals across the fields of musicology, cultural history, and French Studies, and she frequently shares her research with wider audiences through talks, articles and podcasts.

Since November 2024, Emma has been working as an Ingénieure d’études (equivalent to Research Assistant) on a new collaborative archival project in partnership with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, AixOPÉRA. Read more about the project here.

Outside of her research, Emma has extensive teaching experience. During her prior roles at the University of Oxford, she covered eight courses for twelve Colleges across the University, and also taught Visiting Students from the United States. She is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
